How the Heck Do I: Dungeons & Dragons

Welcome to class and the first of The Rook Room’s “How the Heck” game-teaching series! We’ll be hosting our first class at Confluence Brewing Company on September 26th.
In today’s class, you’ll learn how to play Dungeons & Dragons. The tabletop role-playing game has been around for decades, but you’ve probably heard about it more recently thanks to a surge of pop culture references in shows like Stranger Things, Community, and Gravity Falls or thanks to some very famous D&D fans like Dwayne Johnson, Vin Diesel, Stephen Colbert, Joe Manganiello, or Anderson Cooper, to name a few.
Your instructor for the evening will be Paul Privitera, the dungeon master and creator of Des Moines & Dragons, Des Moines’ only Dungeons & Dragons podcast! He’s a pro and you will learn a ton (while having an awesome time).
WHO IS THIS EVENT FOR?
This event is for anyone and everyone! Never touched a 20-sided die in your life? Perfect. Played dozens of campaigns, but want a refresher on the basic rule? Done!
If you’ve ever been curious to learn more about what D&D is and how to play, this event is for you. We’ll be covering:
- Character creation
- Basic gameplay
- Which dice to use when
- How to interact with other characters
- How combat works
- And much more!
BUT DON’T I NEED EXPENSIVE DICE AND BOOKS?
Nope! There’s an incorrect perception out there that you need to spend a ton of money on expensive books, dice, miniatures, maps, and more. No way. All you need is the excitement to play.
In fact, everyone who comes to How the Heck Do I: Dungeons & Dragons will get their very own set of dice to take home as well as some character sheets and rules guides to get you started!
BUT, LIKE, D&D IS JUST FOR NERDS, RIGHT?
Stop. It. Right. There. First off, D&D is for everyone. Didn’t you see the list of cool, A-list celebrities at the top of this event page? Second off, nerds are cool, so we don’t even know why you’re asking this question.
Moral of the story: this event is for literally everyone and you don’t have to feel nervous, intimidated, out of your league, scared, or anything else. All you have to worry about is containing your excitement and finding a group of fellow players once you get hooked!
SO WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW AND HOW DO I SIGN UP?
When: September 26th from 5:30 to 7:30. Check runs 5:30 to 6 and class begins right at 6:00 pm.

Who: Anyone and everyone. Get some friends and come on down!
What: Paul Privitera from the Des Moines & Dragons podcast will be teaching the basics of Dungeons & Dragons. Grab your favorite Confluence brew and learn how to play D&D from 6:00 to 7:30 pm. Stick around after to hang out, play, and chat!
